Top Five Reasons Why Noone is Reading Your Blog

“Why do so few people read and share my blog? How can I pimp it up?”

These are just some of the questions I get from bloggers, regarding what they can do to make their blog posts more attractive.

Of course, there can be a number of reasons why people don’t read your blog.

Maybe it suddenly started to snow, maybe someone made lasagne for dinner, maybe the baby started crying, maybe there's a Sex and the City-marathon on TV, or maybe (God forbid) they have a life outside the internet!

Not to mention the obvious reason #1 why no one reads your blog: They can’t find it!

Using SEO techniques to make your blog post search engine optimalized, is a completely separate field that I will not go into here.

But when it comes to what makes your text more clickable, readable, engaging and enticing to share, I think a lot of bloggers have a thing or two to learn from journalism.

There are a number of clever tricks that may help modern internet users choose to read YOUR text in the sea of possibilites.


Here are 5 reasons why readers give up your text ­, and what you can do about it:

1. The Headline isn’t Captivating

Yes, the headline of your post matters the most. Consider it the first handshake, a preview for a movie, the first gaze from someone across the room. If you don’t hook your reader, the battle is lost.

On the Internet, the most important rule is: People must care enough to CLICK.

Imagine if Edward Norton had opened the movie Fight Club saying:“Now I'll tell you an interesting story about two boys who fight a lot.” Well, ahem, I'll leave it up to you to judge.

Instead he says: “The first rule of Fight Club is you do not talk about Fight Club.”

As viewers we jump straight into the essence of the film with a single sentence that plays on the news criterias sensation, mystery and curiosity: What kind of secret club might this be?

Then the camera pans quickly, as if we first found ourselves inside the main character's brain and experienced his fears from within, but now we are moved outside, to see the result of this mysterious fight club: his battered face in all its splendor.

Anyone who isn't curious to know what happens next in that movie, must be made of steel.

The same technique can be transferred to writing! Think about this the next time you write the headline, and the first few sentences of your blog post: Do I draw the readers in by making them curious to know more?

Yes? Okay, move on.
No? Try again.

2. It Doesn’t Have a Clear Focus

In journalism, focus is called “the angle.” This means that the text is completely decided on what it will discuss and will stick to this point all the way through, so that the reader is able to hang on until the end of the piece.

There are tons of blog posts out there the are based on the day­-to­-day-life of whoever writes them. They offer a bit of this and a little of that, not to mention a little too much of something else.

This usually leaves the reader confused and exhausted and wondering why they clicked on this post in the first place.

What is it all about? And what is the actual goal here? Should it entertain, inspire, inform or just ramble incoherently about what goes on in the writer's head at that moment?

Think like a journalist: Finding the angle is the backbone of every story. Stay focused on one main point of each post, and let everything spring from this, like the leaves of a sunflower.

If you have multiple points that you would like to make, it makes more sense to create separate blog posts for each point.

3. It Lacks Emotion

Texts that read like a square, brick house just don´t awaken engagement with readers. You can be as accurate, knowledgeable and skilled as you want, but if your text is as emotionless as an Ikea shelf, you don’t stand a chance.

You need to FEEL something as you type, and you must get the reader to FEEL something while he or she reads.

This can be achieved by being honest and genuine, by sharing something universal and human, by digging into something difficult and explain it, or by using humor.

Blog posts work the best when you have taken the trouble to crawl out on the tip of the cliff that the reader is currently hanging onto, and not the least: When you are able to express what she feels looking down into the abyss, wondering how the *** she will survive this.

In other words, your text should radiate: “I know how you feel! And I FEEL with you.”

4. It's Poorly Structured

Poorly structured texts are probably more common than secret crushes.

Quick Test: If your blog post looks like a lump of words without punctuation, headers and distinct divisions ­ (kind of like a set of chinese instructions on the back of some electronical gadget), it feels like a chore to read.

If the text also lacks focus (angle) and a tempting header, you’re doomed.

Don’t serve your readers formats that will exhaust them! Keep it simple and comfortable.

5. It's Too Self­ Centered

Sure, trivial details about yourself can be both useful, interesting and entertaining, if they are put in a context that GIVES the reader something.

Can you make your heart ache universal, portray it in a way that makes it greater than yourself?

Even if you share something from your own life in your blog post, the text is not only ABOUT YOU.

Instead, let it start out with an anecdote from your life (after all: a random person on the face of this earth) to illustrate something that others can relate to.

Basically, the reader wants to know: What’s in it for me? Always imagine that the reader is asking you this question.

And yep, you guessed it: Only YOU as a writer know the answer.
